  6. Competitive balance lottery is great in theory, but as the MLB shows it is all about implementation, little logic to the whole process.

    ReplyDelete
  7. that sucks....NONE of the teams should be left out. Just give them the last pick.

    Mac,

The mid-season reviews, lots of people were saying a resurgent El Toro was going to be one of the keys to team success. And now he's out with an injury ??

    Definitely not good.

Josh Harrison. Most recent nine games. .233 BA. .573 OPS.

    Last five games. .133 BA, .356 OPS. (And a sOPS+ of 4 -- that's right, four -- where 100 = average.)

I may have to get down on my knees and start praying that Harrison finds his mojo again.

  20. Bye Bye Martinez or Pedro to the DL?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seems probable one of those

Are you surprised by Dilson Herrera's 359./421./581. line in 30 games at Binghamton, so far? Is he a Top 100 candidate for next season?

    Klaw

    (1:05 PM)

I like Herrera quite a bit and he is a top 100 candidate, but 30 games at any level by any player is a blink of an eye.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well they lost a few days by using Marte the other day to pinch hit
Can not back date him to Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That would make the most sense

Is it possible to assume that Glasnow's terrible control early on this season was related to his back injury?

    Yes.

  30. Gosh, Marte, guy can't but a break this year... such a loss, to me...As far as Morel, whatever... won't probably get more than at bat for what I can only guess is the Marte 7 day DL, maybe I'm wrong, guessing...

  38. Josh (Iowa)

Can I get your opinion on a guy like Brock Holt? Does he continue to have value beyond this season? I keep reading he isn't this good, unimpressive minor league numbers, serious regression to come....what is your take on his future in the league?

    Klaw

    (1:30 PM)

He's not this good. Future bench type.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Joe (NJ)

Any evidence that players with low OBP in minors can be taught patience and increased OBP?

    Klaw

    (1:47 PM)

At a gross level, no. Individual examples exist, and we remember them more (availability bias) because they were unusual and because they made it. Most folks don't remember the guys who never figured it out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sounds like your chrome has a bug :)

He has 12 singles and no extra-base hits in 35 at bats. I'm a big fan based on the tools, but I'd like to see him perform now.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Macchamp wants the Bucs to beat the Reds to the punch in acquiring Marlon Byrd. Might be worth it due to Marte's health issues.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yup, if you agonize over Dilson, you probably won't want any other trade... as we get better, the difference maker becomes more painful...

    ReplyDelete
  81. We can just trade Brian Morris for one.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It looks like the Brewers will win again. Who do you root for, the Reds or Brewers? :/

    ReplyDelete
  83. Why not Decker (Dacker? Duker?)

Before you talk about how bad he could be, look who we're bringing up.

I'd almost rather bring up d'Arnaud. You see that catch in center field the other day?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Brewers for now.....let's bury the Reds...then there is 1 less team to deal with....

    ReplyDelete
  85. Have we had the Oliver Perez conversations yet?

The Pirates are scouting the Diamondbacks‘ bullpen of late, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, who speculates that old friend Oliver Perez could be a potential target for the Bucs.

    ReplyDelete
  86. The Reds announcers are ripping the teams effort. No fire etc, etc. That's a good sign :)

Rays still think they are still in the playoff hunt, and there is only a week left until the non waiver deadline.
I don't see them having a collapse against Boston or Milwaukee(their next opponents after the cardinals.
No way is he getting dealt to the Cardinals or anyone else until the offseason.

I thought it was funny how Selig was "praising" the implementation of the replay system, but totally ignoring the main reason for this need.

Most of the umpires, are just play bad!.
If these guys can get the calls right in the 1st place, would be no need for this current set up.

My ideal version of replay is that Home runs, POTENTIAL run scoring plays, and the 3rd out of an inning are the only things that can be challenged, no exceptions!

While on the subject, is their any stats which show which team are getting screwed by the umpires the most?.

There has to be stats ,pertaining to how many teams have used challenges, how many are turned over in their favor, and how many are not allowed to be challenged, due to a technicality, such as the play was in front of the umpire.

I would bet strongly the Pirates have to be 1 of the teams that use a bunch of challenges, and most are reversed in their favor, due to the part the umpires are screwing them more than other clubs.
    Just a feeling!

    ReplyDelete
  103. So, I am seeing that Morel has a locker ready at PNC.

Does anyone know exactly when they started giving the ball boys/girls lockers with the players?

Whenever it was, it's a really nice gesture to make them feel like they are part of the team. :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. I applaud the effort even if they fall flat on their faces.

Something has to be done about giving kids the false impression that they are one of the very few special athletes that can rise to the professional level and becoming icons.

    ReplyDelete
  105. tom from st pete floridaJuly 23, 2014 at 5:53 PM

They would have to give the rays at least 3 guys to step in now, and 2 others to fill out their aa or aaa rosters.

Again , Price is not going to be traded to anyone until the offseason, at the earliest. You can probably say the same thing about Zobrist.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Andy LaRoche was unavailable so we have to settle for Morel.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Sounds like legitimate use with being an idiot and not reporting it

Yeah, the one he had 2 days before Hurdle let him pinch hit.
    Smart move there, Pirate braintrust.
Time to give Lambo a shot!
While they are at it, either find a back up ss off the heap, or bring up d arnaud.
Anything has to be better than the current stiff who occupys the 25th spot on the roster.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I jinxed him. Cano gets a base hit

    ReplyDelete
  111. Beimel is starting to look like Brian Wilson

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yes it is , thanks for asking. thanks for asking. They are just doing minor little things now. Dry walling the garage and painting it. Things like that. What's up with you?

    ReplyDelete
  113. You need hair, to look like Wilson

    ReplyDelete
  114. I can't stand the move... but it makes the most sense if Pedro cant play and Marte goes to the DL. Tough going into a game with Martinez as your only backup at 3 positions. Hopefully Petey can play tomorrow and they can call up Lambo.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Just being handsome and beloved. The usual.

    ReplyDelete
  116. It's tough being you

    ReplyDelete
  117. Any idea why Morel up instead of Lambo? Does this mean Pedro's likely to miss extended time?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Because morel is 3rd baseman and Lambo is 1st baseman and OF They could send back down tomorrow if Pedro can play but Pedro probably out a few days

    ReplyDelete
  119. TomP....here's a fun tool for instant replay stats. I don't think it will tell you that we are getting screwed more often, but fun to play around with:

    http://baseballsavant.com/apps/replays.php

    ReplyDelete
  120. I was just curious about something, so I looked it up. With Marlon Byrd, the Pirates last year were 17-13, .566. Without Byrd, they were 77-55, a .583 pct. Hmm, that's interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Makes me think we would have been *really* terrible without him

    ReplyDelete
  122. The offense isn't really a problem, neither is the pitching now. The team has been one of the best in baseball, after they dug the early season hole. A tweek or doing nothing will be fine.
