  1. Shew, So many new comments coming in on that last one I literally couldn't keep up. Enjoy the afternoon.

  2. Oh one thing I really like about this west coast trip is I only see two games starting after 10 and a total of four starting after 9PM.

    ReplyDelete
  3. One last question... does anyone else have the new Disqus setup under the reply red circle on the top right? It's great on my laptop because you can see the actual replies and reply yourself straight from there.

The old version shows up on my desktop... it's weird.

    ReplyDelete
  4. thanks for new thread, but not complaining but think it might need a refresh, no worries, I can deal with going to MLB.com for next games :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I'm going to complain a little. Come on, this soon after the all star break, so we really need the day off? It's not that far from Pittsburgh to Colorado.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 452 comments... Don't thimk I will be able to catch up today. Hope we play good on the road tri. We should be able to come home with a darn good record since to ASB.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Seems perfect to me bro... with Alvarez hurt and Marte, nice timing, stars are aligned in my crazy world :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Some late nights on the trip

    ReplyDelete
  9. What's wrong with it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Calling up my inner Marty....I predict a 5-4 road trip.....

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't know, maybe nothing but when I scroll up I only see dates and a @ sign... No worries, I'm not arguing or caring honestly. thx

    ReplyDelete
  12. Odd, I was thinking for west coast it wasn't too bad. Figured more would be after 9 or 10.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 2-3, 3 times equal 6-3

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hmm, showing up ok for me. I'll check other browers.

    ReplyDelete
  15. no worries, others must see the games, I don't care but many thanks

    ReplyDelete
  16. Weird, it is even showing up properly on my phone.

    ReplyDelete
  17. By the way.....what happened to Sunday August 3rd...is it a 4 game Diamonbacks series which would make it a 10 day road trip....
Which changes my prediction to 6-4.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Your crazy world. Mine likes to have a game to listen to on the radio on the way home.

    ReplyDelete
  19. and I'm trying hard to explain why I'm not hanging with her when an off day, so there is no OFF DAY bro :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Gotta blame Google I guess. Figured they were showing me 10 games out but only 9.

    ReplyDelete
  21. He may just not be able to load the team icons...?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Would rather waste your time arguing about Zobrist, drew or your non sensical belief that Alvarez can be shifted to 1b this year :} :) :).. but I really dont care but on my computer this is what I see..

  23. and I don't care, probably my Macs fault, though doesn't explain your view about Drew :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. How many games on the road on this trip, sorry Hunter for asking, and against who if you have time to answer, thx

    ReplyDelete
  25. Prolly going 10 days as opposed to games.

    Captain Obvious Arriba

    ReplyDelete
  26. Y, but it's not really West Coast. CO and, I think, AZ only 2 hours behind.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Google should know better. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is PGH east coast :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Arizona just depends on the time of year.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Funny thing, baseball. You see the overall records and think we should sweep the Rockies, or at least 2/3. But then you see the home/away splits and we're both under .500, although they're better. So I'm going to go with my gut. I'll be happy with 5-5 on this trip, but obviously hoping for better.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OK. And AZ right now is 3 back, so I guess we just got lucky with them. Of course, everyone who lives there is over 70 so maybe they need to start earlier to get in bed earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yup, yeah, okie dokie, my point was about comparing AZ to LA, wonder if much different, sure folks will do it, and see if it is over 600 miles from boston to PGH... probably more but still the same ballbark

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm not sure what you're saying there. Too much sake tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yup, tee times in the morning, time for sleep for them :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Arizona doesn't recognize Daylight Savings Time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Tampa Bay 15-4 run. At least close to wild card (4 1/2 games)
I don't think they will trade Price or Zobrist...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh gosh, exactly why we love baseball, see a sweep? Ends up fighting for 1 game the other way, then the opposite... but gos Nycrob, when Marte returns, and with Snyder.. ummm, whatever this team will be special, especially with Cole pitching the 8th, I'm ducking again...

    ReplyDelete
  38. If they trade Price I still think Cards are front-runner, so for the sake of the next two years I hope the Rays keep running up the standings.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Said that Tuesday about them and the Sox still beliveing, but now see Tampa more so.. good stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  40. I re-read it a few times but haven't got it, give me ten minutes :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thankfully the last 3 of those 15 wins were in St. Louis. It' s a real shame that they aren't moving to Milwaukee for their next series.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hunter...both you and I (I think) wanted Phil Hughes. Just saw on MLBTV that he has given up at least 5 runs in 5 of his last 6 starts.

    Ouch!

    ReplyDelete
  43. kidding, but thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I thought you went for a bike ride?

    ReplyDelete
  45. A's DFA Jim Johnson. Just another reason not to pay high $$$ for relievers.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Just got back...icing down...needed something to do while icing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So they trade away prospects for a closer making $10M/yr and then go an DFA him?

It appears that they haven't read that Moneyball book. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. What are you willing to give up for AJ? (Let's just assume he'll be here only for this year and we won't owe him too much money)

    ReplyDelete
  49. 2.76 FIP. 3.31 xFIP, ERA sitting at 4.00 in the AL... I'd still take him in the NL this year.

    ReplyDelete
  50. A cheese sandwich, a bottle of water, and a bus ticket to a destination of choice.
Why do people want AJ? Who is he pitching better than?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Michael Martinez?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I hear he has a pretty extensive no trade clause. You'll have to get approval..

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'd rather we kept BOTH Teds, thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mets visit Miller tonight so Pirates will open road trip tied with Cards either 3 or 2 back. The bet would be 3 back but anything can happen in baseball and Gee can pitch a good game

    ReplyDelete
  55. If he can pitch like he did the other night against Giants...C prospect.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Again, like me you stand up, but perhaps you are not wrong about Hughes just yet :) :),

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yes, anything can happen in baseball.
    We shall see....

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yup it is a Marathon, we miss Kershaw but the gods now say they miss Colon... trying to be serious but yup... :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Mets on a nice run the last few weeks, Brewers not so much.

Gee having a much better year than Garza. Actually... with how heavily favored Vegas has the Brewers it is awfully tempting!

    ReplyDelete
  60. same, I'm going to go lose money...on my own, not your fault :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wow...Barry Bonds turning 50.....
    I am old.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would trade TedOlds for a AA prospect, tedwins, for a a drop off the blog/40 man..

    ReplyDelete
  63. Funnny, first time I felt old when was when Larry Bird retired, and I have got other reminders since :( :(

    ReplyDelete
  64. Sounds like that is a non- issue if he would go to the Pirates.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think he BB could still be Ortiz :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I was talking about tedwins... :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Marte wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire, don't forget. He's capable of doing special things, but he hasn't been doing them as much as we like this year.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hmmm, that guy is compelling but can we put up with his attitude, similar to Manziel :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Chipper Jones was my first real smack in the face. To see a guy have a 20 year career and clearly remember the start of it... welp, I'm not as old as most of you fogies but I'm not as young as I used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  70. actually that impacted me as well...

    ReplyDelete
  71. The Pirates would be very wise if, in the near future, they tear up Cutch's current contract and make him a Pirate for life. Or at least sign him through something like 2022 when he will be 36. His current deal expires with an option year in 2018. That really isn't that far off. If anybody in Pirate history ever deserved a $100 million+, multi-year deal it's Andrew. What a tremendous PR coup that would be if the FO could pull it off.

    ReplyDelete
  72. ...hmmmm... I know, probably my bad, I have this weird love for Marte and how he makes us better... this year just seems cursed for him :( :( :(

    ReplyDelete
  73. It would, but he would have to REALLY like Pittsburgh for it to work. He'd be leaving a lot of money on the table.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm the same way. Other than Cutch, he's my favorite Pirate, but you can't deny he hasn't been up to normal standards.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm a huge Larry Bird fan. Love the guy. And interestingly enough, I think he is somewhat under appreciated and under rated. The guy averaged a double-double for his career, won 3 NBA titles, and 3 straight league MVP awards. He was arguably the best player in the NBA from about 1981 to 1986.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I wish certain writers would stop spouting off about how Andrew is the best contract bargain in baseball. Six years for $51.5 mil is not chicken feed but you are right - he could very well command Pujols money after the 2018 season.

    ReplyDelete
  77. and I hate to say it, the intanglibles (sp?)... ability to move a small or big forward outside the key to let DJ drive or Ainge post up, etc... nevermind... I can bore you guys forever :(... Iron5, greatest starting 5 every, but no bench :(

    ReplyDelete
  78. just bad luck, lets discuss bro in mid August once he recovers :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. he makes alot of money for the next 4 years, not market value but 10, 13, 14, and 15 year option, all good for him and thankful for us???

    ReplyDelete
  80. They say that based on his performance since he signed that contract.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If Len Bias hadn't died I really think the C's would have won at least 2 more titles. Bias was the next Jordan. He would have taken so much pressure off of Bird and McCale and would have cut down their minutes considerably.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Oh my god, best comment to me of the night, me and my friends in Boston have been saying that since 87 :) :) :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. If you ever spent time with me and my friends, again, spot on,.... :( :( :(

    ReplyDelete
  84. tom from st pete floridaJuly 24, 2014 at 3:30 PM

I thought about this the other day.
In terms of Public relations, i feel at the least(especially if he wins another MVP) is to re do the contract, and add another 5 million per year to the current deal.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hard to believe that it in only 2 years it will be 30 years since Bonds started with the Bucs!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. When you really know you're getting old is when players start to die (Gwynn, Puckett) and they are younger than you are!! Yikes!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. tom from st pete floridaJuly 24, 2014 at 3:33 PM

How could cutting the minutes of 2 future hall of famers be a good thing?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I hadn't heard about this before....

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/aaron-barnett-and-brandon-barnes-engage-in-national-anthem-standoff-sequel-224159493.html

    ReplyDelete
  89. Gosh you know I respect you JayRod, but I would never do that.... If we can extend him great but the least of my problems/focus right now, if I'm NH which probably makes you right :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. tom from st pete floridaJuly 24, 2014 at 3:35 PM

If they are really really hell bent on picking up a starter, they should set the bar just a little higher in terms of production , and future payroll ramifications.

Not a good deal, unless the Phillies are picking up around 50 to 60% of the remainder, and the Pirates give them back crap.

I would just pass, and who knows, maybe NH is just creating a smoke screen.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Thanks for that :(

    ReplyDelete
  92. hadn't heard about the recent, remember the Van Slyke vs Kelly one

    ReplyDelete
  93. tom from st pete floridaJuly 24, 2014 at 3:37 PM

2 semi marginal players getting there 15 minutes of fame.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Oh boy TOMP, if Bias lived it would have allowed Bird and McHale to get normal time during that time of their carear..

    ReplyDelete
  95. From Colin Dunlap:

Told by multiple sources Tabata demoted as much for play as for steering Marte down bad path. Front office doesn't want that around Polanco.

If true, why is he in Indy? If he is a clubhouse cancer, just DFA him.

    ReplyDelete
  96. tom from st pete floridaJuly 24, 2014 at 3:38 PM

Price is going no where, unless they drop to double digits behind Baltimore at the deadline.

That won't happen, and neither will Price to the Cardinals.

    ReplyDelete
  97. The Iron 5 term came from bias dying, DJ, Ainge, Bird, Parrish, and McHale got worn out bro... I lived it, had tickets... oh well....

    ReplyDelete
  98. How was he steering him down the wrong path - in what way?

    ReplyDelete
  99. I don't get this at all Foo, not your fault, the writer...

    ReplyDelete
  100. Former Pirate news

The Texas Rangers have promoted right-handed reliever Nate Adcock from the minors, a day after trading closer Joakim Soria to the Detroit Tigers.

Adcock joined the team for Thursday's game against the New York Yankees.

The 26-year-old Adcock was 1-0 with one save and a 2.76 ERA in 13 games at Triple-A Round Rock.

Adcock pitched 36 games for Kansas City in 2011 and 2012, and signed with Texas in the offseason. He had a rib removed this spring in surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, a nerve problem that was causing numbness in his right arm and hand.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Dd....making him get lip tattoos?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Lambo off to hot start....NH noticing

    http://www.piratesprospects.com/2014/07/andrew-lambo-off-to-a-hot-start-after-return-from-thumb-injury.html

Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington has noticed Lambo’s hard work
as well and is aware that the bounce back is due to the effort that he
    put in.

“It’s been great to see him get rewarded for how hard he worked on
his rehab,” Huntington said. “He worked hard to keep the non-injured
baseball parts of his body in baseball condition. That’s definitely
showing. He’s been able to jump back much quicker than most young
players, or most players come back from thumb surgery.”

    ReplyDelete
  103. So?, I think I remember him :)... ok, good for him...

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yeah..saw that.
He was supposedly a problem in Yankee system.

    ReplyDelete
  105. for me, it was when Barry Bonds came up, coz I remember when his dad was a hotshot rookie.

Just another reason to hate that man.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Now I'm curious. What bad path is Marte on?

    ReplyDelete
  107. need to ask Colin.

    ReplyDelete
  108. If that was the case, they should bring him up until they can get Polanco inked (and not with another set of lips).

    ReplyDelete
  109. can they 'tear up' baseball contracts?

They do it for football, but I thought they were stuck with baseball contracts (unless arb contracts, of course)

    ReplyDelete
  110. Jury's out on that, my friend.

    ReplyDelete
  111. The others hear know better, what is Dunlap's actual position now? It aggravates me to no end that people, constantly comment on the high quality of DK's "reporting."

    ReplyDelete
  112. Dunlap is talk show host on 93.7 the fan in Pittsburgh..

    ReplyDelete
  113. This guy pulls no punches in this article..

    robneyer ‏@robneyer
There's not much recent evidence to suggest Kendrys Morales will actually help the #Mariners: http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/just-a-bit-outside/baseball-joe/blog/deceiving-hitting-streaks-starring-kendrys-morales-072414 …

    ReplyDelete
  114. you'll get lots of 'DK is the devil' support on here....lol

    ReplyDelete
  115. I haven't heard a word about Pedro having a bad attitude or work ethic. Has there been any talk out there? He's sitting him against lefties because he's not hitting them and removing him for late game d because he's throwing the ball to the beer guy.

    ReplyDelete
  116. that is pretty clear.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Hunter...since I got things working on Firefox, I decided to go to 'reset to defaults' with Google.

    I see everything now.

However, all extensions, addons, etc are lost.

    What was the Icon extension?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Here's some more details:

ntroduced when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement began in December 2011, the Competitive Balance Lottery gives teams that have either one of the 10 smallest markets or 10 smallest revenue pools one of six additional choices after each of the first and second rounds. Additionally, any other clubs that receive revenue-sharing funds are eligible for the supplemental second-round selections.

There were 15 teams eligible to receive a pick in this year's lottery -- the Twins and Mariners were eligible for a Round B selection only, by virtue of having received revenue sharing. The Pirates, Rays and Royals were not selected.

  120. What kind of writer puts out a comment that someone is leading someone down the wrong path and not complete the story of how? And, from multiple sources yet. How many sources can there be?

    ReplyDelete
  121. Thanks, with the magic of internet I now know the recent succession of Pirates beat writers. I'm really not going too put much stock in this "report," it is sports talk radio.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Point him to Longoria and Braun's contracts and do something similar with a touch more on top.

    ReplyDelete
  123. That would be ideal, if a bit hopeful.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I would give it to you but that would really upset robshelb.

    ReplyDelete
  125. What's the problem with the pre-game thread not being up!

What's that? Off day? Son of a .......!

    I like Ike.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Probably a bit hopeful... BUT there is at least some precedent out there.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Chris Leroux back up with Yankees.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Feeling confident he can bring down that 22.50 ERA.

    ReplyDelete
  133. only 163 comments, what's the deal

    ReplyDelete
  134. Five number ones!!!

    ReplyDelete
  135. Had to move after the 460 this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I know

    ReplyDelete
  137. Men's room is a busy place....

    ReplyDelete
  138. You think the Pirates could pay Braun money for someone who will be 36 at the end?

    ReplyDelete
  139. Prediction: 0 trades for the Pirates by the trade 'deadline'. One or two before September 1st.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I'm guessing I should be happy I wasn't able to install that extension now? :)

    ReplyDelete
  141. Not sure what you think of DK has to do with Colin, but I met Colin at the last "gathering" I went to, when he had just become the PG baseball beat writer.
Don't know whether he's right on this, but he's no hack.

And he was a nice guy, for whatever that's worth.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I gave 5 thumbs up!!!

    ReplyDelete
  143. And he has made connections over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Sounds like a personal problem.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I specifically said it wasn't a lack of effort. And I didn't say it was a bad attitude. What I meant was stubbornness. I have long believed he listened more to Boras than Pirates management. Examples? Not going to winter ball when they asked him to, and his ridiculous swing between at bats.

You can argue with me on that, but not on effort, "bad attitude" or how he wears his hat. I didn't now, and never have, criticized him on those issues.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Not commenting on the quality of the men at all. DK is a great at what he does, one of the few local writers I've read that can knowledgeably move between sports, but in the end he is an opinion columnist. It is not just the facts, it is his interpretation of the facts.

On Dunlap, I just don't put the same amount of weight on information from a sports radio host/columnist as I do a written report from a beat writer or an interviewed beat writer. I think the distinctions are important. I wasn't saying anyone was a hack I just put emphasis on from who and how information is dispersed. Maybe I'm totally off base.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Appreciate that Andrew. And I see what you are saying now. I just don't think Colin would make something up. He might be wrong, but he has some basis for making the comment.

But we all have to decide who and what we believe.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Your "thumb" is in a strange place. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  149. I see that is was two tweets, never know what to make of those. Possibly there is more context, if I get the change I'll listen to his show from today.

I'm skeptic, on all things, usually just want more information.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Ike's OPS vs RHP this year is .746, far from a guarantee that Lambo could do that.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Hoping for a 5-5 trip. Rockies are a completely different team at home, and are throwing 3 straight lefty starters again. Lefties just neutralize this offense so much. Russ has a .464 OPS vs lefties, Polanco .396, Walker has zero power (.369 slugging % as opposed to .495 vs RHP), the bench is non-existent since Snider, Davis, and Pedro will all be there and are all lefties. Giants are just 22-25 since June 1st, but going to AT&T is never easy. Plus the Bucs will face Bumgarner, Hudson, and Lincecum. Will have to fight, scratch, and claw to go 2-4 in those games. Then they need to go take 3 of 4 from the pitiful Diamondbacks. Won't be an easy 10 days coming up, hopefully the Bucs get some reinforcements via trade while on the road....

    Wait !!!!

That little whale isn't waving hello. He *tricked* me.

Obviously, what he's *rilly* doing is waving bye-bye to Chris Capuano.

    Guess I learned my lesson.

You know what they always say --

Can't have too much pitching, and never trust a whale emoticon.

    Oh well . . .

  157. Yes, but won't be easy. Especially Bumgarner and Hudson. One with a 3.19 ERA the other with a 2.89 ERA.

  158. "The 35-year-old starter had not been given a chance to pitch for a Rockies club that is desperate for pitching, despite throwing 19 1/3 strong innings at Triple-A (2.79 ERA, 9.8 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9)."

Going from one pitching desperate team to the next.

    Walrus,

Five great innings from Kingham -- and then his wheels fell off in the sixth. Couldn't find the strike zone.

    I never saw that coming.

    Bummer.

And then Mazzaro comes in to pitch with one out in the top of the 6th. Throws his first two pitches for balls, and then promptly gives up a bases-clearing double.

    This is a CATASTROPHE.

Now a wild pitch from Mazzaro -- which ends up being a walk a few pitches later with ball four in the dirt.

  164. yep...that ruined my day.

Though he could hold appeal as a setup option to a contender, Astros closer Chad Quallsappears unlikely to change hands at the trade deadline,MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart reports. Qualls, 35, has been lights out this year with a 1.78 ERA and 7.9 K/9 against just 1.0 BB/9.

  167. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they go 2-4 the next two series. Colorado a tough place to play, Rockies throwing 3 straight lefties and lefties carve up the Bucs, one of them is Anderson who dominated the Pirates last Saturday, then get Bumgarner, Hudson, and Lincecum. Like I said, will be surprised if they go 2-4 in those games...

as much for play as for steering Marte down bad path. Front office
    doesn't want that around Polanco.

  174. Don't they report trades, too?

    ReplyDelete
  175. That is not the question, the question is if they don't want him around Polanco why is ok for him to be around Rojas and others in Indy.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Thanks G4! I sure hope Tabby wasn't counseling him about marriage.

  190. and lets say he says he won't can the pirates believe that after his I will retire or will play in Pittsburgh.

I cant see how they would even consider bringing him back with the antics from the end of last year and the way he embarrassed NH with his "Pittsburgh or retire BS. so no need to make me a QO"

AJ is yesterdays news and I don't know that he would outperform any current Pirate starter. Supposedly he is pitching with a sports hernia which could shut him down at any point and he is still making a lot of money.

No way AJ is coming back nor would I want him back if I was Pirates FO.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Gee I just can't understand how every team in baseball passed TWICE on Mazzaro when Bucs DFA'd him.....

  194. I talk about this sometimes....the fans here, and the casual fans that make the sell-out at the games. And many here do not want AJ, but you can bet if he returned it would be a special night when he made his first start at PNC Park.
