4 Does Not Go Into 3

Pirates began the day with 4 out of option pitchers trying for 3 spots.  Word is that Morris has made the team. leaving 3 pitchers for 2 spots.

Jenmar Gomez-The Pirates got Gomez from the Indians for Quincy Latimore, who is also back in the system so Gomez was a free pickup.  Pitching as a long reliever and spot starter, Gomez had a solid 2013.  His line:

 3-0-0, 3.35 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 80.2 IP, 3.1 BB/9, 5.9 K/9

Vin Mazzaro-Obtained from  Royals with Clint Robinson for Luis Rico and Luis Sanchez.  Pitching in middle relief last season and was very good.

8-2-1, 2.81 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 73.2 IP, 2.6 BB/9, 5.6 K/9


Stolmy Pimentel-Obtained from Red Sox  with  Ivan De Jesus, Mark Melancon and Jerry Sands  for Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt.

His AAA line last season  2-6-0, 3.13 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 92.0 IP, 2.1 BB/9, 6.1 K/9

All three are righthanded.  Mazzaro is strictly a reliever while Gomez and Pimentel can start.  Pimentel was a starter in the minors.

Tomorrow teams have to get down to 25 tomorrow so something has to happen.  Pirates really have two options, a trade sending a reliever off or putting  one of the pitchers on waivers.  Odds are high that someone would claim any of the three.

Meanwhile someone has to come off the 40 so Ishikawa.  Speculation is that Andy Oliver, also out of options, will be released and is likely to get through waivers.

Going to be an interesting next 24 hours.
