Pirates Quiet in Rule 5 Draft

The Pirates passed on all phases of the Rule 5 Draft.

They lost three players:

Andy Oliver was taken by the Phillies in major league phase, which means the Phillies must keep him on the MLB roster all season or offer him back to the Pirates.  Oliver had good season in Indy with a 2.53 ERA in 64 innings, along with a 12.0 K/9 and a 6.6 BB/9.  The high walk rate was holding him back.

The Rays took Luis Urena from the Pirates in the Triple-A portion of the Rule 5 draft.  Urena was an OF with poor plate discipline who the Pirates converted to relief pitcher last season.  How bad was his plate discipline, in 627 plate appearances he struck out 232 times.

The Cardinals took Tyler Waldron in the Triple-A phase. Waldron made it Indy late last season with a 3.79 ERA in 40.1 innings.
