A Sailor’s Life Fairport at its best. As one reviewer wrote “One of several songs
that Denny brought to Fairport Convention when she replaced Judy Dyble in 1968,
"A Sailor's Life" was the most transformed by the band, which turned
it into the first of what would soon become a Fairport Convention trademark,
the traditional folk tune turned into a full-bore electric rock & roll
workout. Denny sings the early verses in a hushed near-whisper to the
accompaniment of Ashley Hutchings' electric bass and Martin Lamble's dramatic
cymbal rolls, with Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol's electric guitars slowly
entering the picture some four minutes into the epic along with the drums.
Denny remains in full control of the song throughout, skillfully building the
tension until Thompson and Nicol's bracing guitar duel that's the song's
emotional climax.” Swarbrick was not a
member at that time but contributed fiddle lines to the song.
