Curtis Mayfield started with The Impressions in 1956, writing hits like People Get Ready and It’s All Right He went sole in 1970 and placed songs on the Hot 100 and/or the R&B chart through the 70s. He was known for bringing social consciousness to soul music. In 1990 he was paralyzed from the neck down after lighting equipment fell on him during a live performance. He continued to perform after the accident. Mayfield died at age 57 in 1999 from complications of type 2 diabetes
