10,000 Maniacs is labeled an Alt-Rock band. I think music people use alt on and performer that does not fit a preconceived pigeonhole. The band continues to tour but their chart success was mostly from 1988 to 1994 when lead singer and songwriter Natalie Merchant left the group for a solo career.
