I made a comment earlier regarding the rotation in 2014 and how it will flow into 2015. The 2015 season feels very far away but in it is definitely close enough that it will and should impact how this off-season is handled. When looking ahead I would say the outfield is set, as are 3rd and 2nd base. Shortstop has some real options with Mercer and most likely Hanson as an option. The hope would be that Tony Sanchez is ready to take over for Martin at catcher and so that leaves the big hole at 1st base. Every other position either has a major league talent already in place or in right field a top end prospect on the verge of making the majors.
Yes yes, I know there are no guarantees but projecting out I think those are fair assumptions.
That leaves the rotation. Of the current group expected to start next year in the rotation only one is reasonably expected to be back in 2015. Gerrit Cole should be in Pittsburgh barring something unforeseen but Francisco Liriano, Wandy Rodriguez, A.J. Burnett and possibly Charlie Morton all have the opportunity to leave between now and then. That also represents about $25M worth of possible expenses that are gone as well.
If we go by the same test as with position players that leave Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon (top end prospect on the verge of making the majors) for the 2015 rotation. While there will be question marks over their heads they will not be nearly as large as those over Brandon Cumpton, Stolmy Pimentel, Jeff Locke, Kyle McPherson, Nick Kingham, Tyler Glasnow, and many more. So if we assume pay increases for in house players (McCutchen's pay goes up, many others going through arbitration) eats up most of the new tv money then what do you do with the $20M to $30M? Does that make it easier to go all in on a 1st baseman now and go young with the rotation next year or do you spread it around to provide some insurance for the rotation? How much planning for 2015 do you do this off-season? And I would say $20M to $30M is the minimum you have to play with as I didn't account at all for increase in ticket sales, etc.
I know what I would do and I will put that in the comment section but I'm curious what the rest of the group would do with all that extra cash burning a hole in your pocket.
